Trying to Channel De Kooning

...but definitely not getting it. That's Willem de Kooning, though Elaine de Kooning was also an interesting painter. If he was a misogynist, as the feminists claim based on his imagery, not his actions, then I guess I am too. He was a fabulous painter and I think his images of women are really great.

I'm guessing about the date, although I clearly remember making it, it was definitely early on at the 32nd St. studio. I was still struggling to make the transition from drawing (press harder or make more marks to make a darker or thicker mark) to painting (mix a new color to make a darker mark, use a bigger brush to make a thicker mark.) They really are very different processes but I haven't thought about it explicitly in a long time. Now (2007), I just switch back and forth without even thinking about it much.

Self Portrait as a Dancing Frog

OK, it's not really a self-portrait. I just couldn't resist including it here as part of the archives. Also, I know the year but not the date. Normally I would therefore average it into June, but I know that it was done during a school semester. I'm guessing this was during the spring semester and the two darker actual self-portraits were the following winter semester.
